About Barry & The Team

Proper fencing, done the proper way — by the same lads, every time.

Failsworth Fencing & Gates is a family-feel firm run out of Ashton Road West. I'm Barry, I've been putting up fences across East Manchester and Oldham for the best part of two decades. What you see is what you get — no subcontractors, no surprises, no "we'll call you back next week".

We use pressure-treated timber from trusted UK suppliers, concrete posts where you want them lasting, and we clear up after ourselves. Every panel is fixed plumb. Every gate swings right. And if it doesn't, we come back and fix it.

Had a 30m run of fencing replaced after the February storms took ours down. Barry came out next day for a look, quoted on the spot, and his lads were putting posts in by Monday. Tidy, quick and half the price of the big national firms.

Barry fitted us a pair of double-sided fence panels and a matching side gate. Proper quality timber, concrete posts all plumb, and he even repointed two bricks on our wall that were loose. Can't fault him. Already recommended to my sister in Chadderton.

We needed a full palisade perimeter for our yard in Moston. Barry quoted in writing the same day and it was up inside of a week. Galvanised, proper triple-point pales. The council inspector actually commented on how neat it was.

Honest, friendly, and didn't treat me like I was daft because I'm a woman asking about fence heights. Barry walked me through the options, we went for 6ft closeboard with concrete posts, and I'm genuinely thrilled. Garden looks twice the size.

Second time we've had Barry out — once for a new front wall, then for a side gate a year later. Turns up when he says he's going to. Cleans up after himself. Prices are fair. That's all you really want from a tradesman, isn't it?

Common Questions

Fencing questions, straight answers.

Everything we're usually asked before a first visit. Anything else, just ring Barry.

Everything we supply as standard is pressure-treated softwood from UK mills — that means it's been tanalised under vacuum pressure so the preservative goes right through the grain, not just surface-dipped. It gives you 10–15 years life minimum on fence panels and around 20+ on posts. If you'd prefer hardwood (oak or iroko for gates, for example) we can source that too, just say when we come to quote.
Standard sizes are 3ft, 4ft, 5ft and 6ft in 6ft-wide panels. Most UK gardens are allowed up to 2m (6ft 6in) on a back boundary and 1m (3ft) on the front without planning permission — though this varies so always double-check with Oldham or Manchester Council. If you want anything over 6ft 6in we can usually do it with a trellis topper that keeps you on the right side of the rules.
Nine times out of ten we'll recommend concrete posts with concrete gravel boards. They don't rot at ground level (where almost every fence actually fails), they're stronger in wind, and if a panel ever needs swapping you just slide it out — no digging. Timber posts are cheaper upfront and look more natural, so they're fine for front gardens or more decorative jobs. We'll give you honest pricing on both so you can pick.
For a standard back-garden rear boundary (say 15–20m with 6–8 panels) we'll normally be in and out in one working day — two at most if we need to come back for the concrete to go off before hanging a gate. Longer runs or walling jobs can take 2–4 days. Quote visits take 15–20 minutes, and we can usually get to you within the week.
Yes — it's all included in the quote. We rip out the old panels and posts, break out concrete footings where needed, and take everything away with us to be disposed of properly (we're registered waste carriers). You won't have a pile of rotten wood sat on your drive for a week.
Workmanship is guaranteed — if a post we set isn't plumb, a panel isn't fixed properly, or a gate doesn't swing right, we come back and fix it at no cost. On top of that, every manufacturer we buy from backs their timber with their own anti-rot guarantee (usually 10–15 years). Concrete posts and gravel boards carry lifetime rot cover. Barry will give you everything in writing before we start.
